The Research on Migration, Refuge and Integration (MFI) is pleased to announce the approval of the new research project “Equal Partnerships – African Intermediary Cities as Actors and Partners in Urban Migration Governance”. The project explores the opportunities and challenges of collaborative, urban migration governance in African intermediary cities in collaboration with the German Development Institute, the think tank Samuel Hall and the city network United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa). Through participatory research and dialogue formats, the project brings together local, national and international actors to develop practical impulses and policy recommendations for equal partnerships of urban migration governance in African intermediary cities.
The project partners cooperate with intermediary cities – a type of African cities that starts receiving growing attention in research and politics. Many of these cities are increasingly confronted with the consequences of climate-related migration, transit migration and rural-urban movements. At the same time, they harbor particular potential to unlock innovation and development opportunities through urban migration governance.
Funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the project will be based at the Centre for Human Rights Erlangen-Nürnberg (CHREN) and start on November 1, 2021.
