On 25 October 2024, CHREN was
very honoured to welcome Sirpa Rautio, the Director of the European Union
Agency for Fundamental Rights, and her colleague Katarina Lughofer for a
lively networking session on the challenges that autocratisation presents to
civil society, human rights advocacy and research, ahead of Ms Rautio’s
commencement address to our graduating MA (Human Rights) students the
same day [M.A. in Human Rights]. The event included participants from the Human
Rights Office of the City of Nuremberg, the International Nuremberg Principles
Academy and the Nuremberg Human Rights Centre. It explored the multiple
roles played by state and societal actors in processes of democratic erosion
and domestic and transnational human rights violations and discussed
potential strategies for countering these trends. The discussion also explored
potentials for future collaborative efforts to counter the effects of
autocratisation.
